Cardiovascular Research Institute

  • Founded: 1991
  • Purpose: Researchers are focused on gaining a better understanding of myocardial cell death, and the contribution of necrosis and apoptosis to cardiac pathology and heart failure.
  • Objectives: To interfere with the death process and promote regeneration of infarcted myocardium.
  • Current research: Includes investigations into myocardial necrosis, apoptosis, proliferation, and regeneration under the influence of native or introduced adult stem cells; the link between diabetes and cardiomyopathy; mechanisms involved in the onset, development and progression of congestive heart failure from a variety of causes; and the relationship between progressive increase in oxidative stress and myocardial cell death and cardiac dysfunction and aging.
