Travel Information & Visiting NYMC

 

Applicants invited for an on-campus interview have the option of staying with a student host through our Overnight Host Program. Instructions regarding how to arrange student overnight host accommodations are included in the interview-invitation e-mail. However please be aware it may be difficult to accommodate hosting requests during exam periods or right before/after vacations. Before finalizing your interview date, please consult the 2012-13 Academic Calendar for first- and second-year students for the anticipated vacation and holiday schedule.

A friendly reminder about being a “good guest”. NYMC students enjoy volunteering to host prospective applicants. They do it to help you learn about the school in a very personal way as well as decrease your travel costs. Please don’t take advantage of their generosity. Student hosts expect your visit to be for one night. If you would like to stay for two nights (for example, to arrive on Saturday for a Monday interview), you can ask your host if it would be convenient. However, please be prepared that it may not be possible to accommodate this request and you may need to make alternative plans for the second night. (See Area Accomodations ). Also - hosts are not expected to provide meals.

PARKING ON CAMPUS: Free Parking is available for invited applicants who park in the visitor parking area #2 located across from the Alumni Center. Follow the yellow applicant signs "New York Medical College School of Medicine Applicant Parking." When you arrive at parking lot #2, please press the buzzer for security and announce yourseld and proceed through the gate. Reserved parking is available to your right. The College cannot reimburse you for parking in a paid lot.

TRAVELING TO NYMC

There are four airports in the New York Metropolitan Area – LaGuardia (LGA), Kennedy(JFK), Newark(EWR) and Westchester County(HPN). Westchester is only about 15 minutes from the campus, however it is relatively small and flights are relatively expensive. Cab fare from Westchester Airport to NYMC can cost between $30 and $40. LaGuardia airport is about 45 minutes from campus. Kennedy and Newark are both approximately one(+)hours from campus. Car/limousine service is available from these airports. Students are encouraged to research in advance the car/limousine fares from LGA, JFK and EWR. Also keep in mind travel time varies greatly with traffic. To travel as inexpensively as possible, we recommend travel by train to Westchester from Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan. Metro-North Railroad runs trains from Grand Central Station to White Plains or North White Plains stations on the Harlem Line. Train schedules are available on the Metro North website. Train fare (one-way) is approximately $9 off peak, and $11 peak one-way to White Plains if you buy your ticket at the train station. If you purchase your ticket on the train (cash only), you will be charged almost double the off-peak or peak fare. The train ride is one hour and the taxi ride about 10 minutes. If you are arriving the morning of your interview, it is best to get off at White Plains station and take a taxi to New York Medical College Administration Building on the grounds of Westchester Medical Center.

TAXI SERVICE FOR LOCAL TRAIN STATIONS & AREA AIRPORTS

Taxis are usually readily at the White Plains Train station. However if you are arriving to the Valhalla or North White Plains train stations, it will probably be necessary to call a cab. The College has arranged for special taxi pricing with All County Transportation Company for visiting applicants. These reduced rates also apply to transportation to and from all four area airports including Westchester, LaGuardia, JFK and Newark. BUS SERVICES

The Bee-Line System runs local buses from Metro-North train stations and other locations around Westchester County. For schedule information call (914) 682-2020. One way fare is approximately $2.00 More information is available on the Bee-Line System website.

PARKING ON CAMPUS

Free Parking is available for invited applicants. The Office of Admissions cannot reimburse you for parking in a paid lot. After viewing the on-line campus map follow the directions to the free visitor parking spaces located across the street from the Alumni Center - building #4 on the map.

WEATHER

In the fall or spring (September-November; April-June), it might be wise to bring a light jacket and umbrella. In the winter (December-March), it can be cold, snowy, or icy; therefore, a heavier coat and boots are advisable. A portion of our interview day includes a tour outdoors.
