Faculty

Harold Michal-Smith, M.D., former professor of pediatrics, died on December 20, 2011.

Robert Goldstein, M.D., professor emeritus of medicine and former associate dean for student affairs, died on April 27, 2012 at the age of 99. Dr. Goldstein joined the College faculty in 1961 and served as chairman of the Department of Medicine from 1969 until 1976. He was also director of the College’s Student Research Fellowship Program. Although Dr. Goldstein retired in 1985, he continued serving on numerous committees including the admissions committee until 2002. Dr. Goldstein’s true fervor was his dedication to the medical students he served. Back in the days when the Office of Student Affairs was a one man show, it is said that Dr. Goldstein carried his office around in his briefcase so he could work at any time or place. When asked about the status of a project or situation, Dr. Goldstein would reply, with complete honesty and confidence, “We’re working on it.” A needlepoint stitched by Pamela Stratton, M.D. ’81, displaying the College seal with Dr. Goldstein’s signature phrase still hangs in the Office of Student Affairs wing today. Students dedicated the yearbook to Dr. Goldstein five times and in 1993 the graduating class established the Robert Goldstein, M.D. Society of Teachers Award to recognize exceptional and inspiring faculty members who have received the students’ excellence in teaching award for ten consecutive years.
