Mission

The mission of the Bioethics Institute of New York Medical College is to promote the care of patients as whole persons through research and teaching in bioethics. As a medical school in the Roman Catholic tradition, New York Medical College is committed to promoting the principles of respect for persons and the dignity of human life. These commitments require careful and serious study of the moral issues that face health care practitioners and patients. The Bioethics Institute accomplishes this goal in two ways.

First, the Institute is dedicated to teaching bioethics to New York Medical College students as an integral part of their education, equipping them with skills that will enable them to meet the moral dilemmas of health care practice now and in the future.

Second, the Institute is dedicated to extending the field of knowledge in bioethics through both descriptive and normative research, disseminating the results of these investigations through scholarly publication. The Institute is committed to maintaining the highest possible academic standards in these endeavors.

The Bioethics Institute is closely associated with the The John J. Conley Department of Ethics at St. Vincents Hospital in New York City. The Conley Department of Ethics and the Bioethics Institute at New York Medical College in Valhalla, NY, are best thought of as two sides of the same coin. St. Vincents is one of the two major teaching hospitals affiliated with New York Medical College. The Conley Department of Ethics at St. Vincents is the site at which clinical teaching, staff development, ethics consultation, and clinical research are conducted. The Bioethics Institute at the Medical College is the site at which undergraduate medical student teaching, faculty development, research ethics, and health policy research are conducted. As Sisters of Charity Chair, Dr. Sulmasy provides leadership for both of these endeavors. Each functions as part of a seamless, unified enterprise.
