MEDICAL COLLEGE HOSTS CONFERENCE AIMED AT CURBING OBESITY

Valhalla, N.Y., September 24, 2012 – A new program aimed at educating health care providers in the management of obesity in their practices may be the first of its kind to successfully integrate technologies from several different disciplines into a powerful, field-tested kit of tools.

New York Medical College will host a full-day conference, “Curbing Obesity—Meeting the Challenges of Medicare Coverage,” on Friday, September 28, 2012, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Westchester Institute for Human Development on the Valhalla campus. The conference will offer a framework of obesity management designed to help physicians, nurses and other clinical professionals to maximize the effectiveness of a proven weight loss system by including modules on exercise from a certified trainer, cooking techniques from a chef, and smart phone applications from a physician/software developer. Practitioners and their staffs will also be trained on how to navigate the complex web of documentation and compliance required for Medicare coverage.

Judith Wylie-Rosett Ed.D., R.D., author, American Diabetes Association’s Complete Weight Loss Workbook, and lead nutritionist, Women’s Health Initiative, will give the keynote address “Overcoming Obesity: The Lessons and Legacy of Long-term Studies.”  The program will also focus on integrating intensive behavioral therapy (IBT) in the primary care setting, an endocrinologist’s perspective on promoting weight loss and novel approaches and protocols and other components for comprehensive care.

Primary care physicians, family care practitioners, internists, obstetrician/gynecologists, pediatricians and geriatricians and their office staffs, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and psychotherapists are encouraged to attend. The decision to charge a registration fee instead of soliciting sponsors enabled the organizers to keep the program free of commercial bias. For more information or to register, please call (914) 493-8370 or visit www.mraphysicians.com. A DVD will be available for purchase after the conference for those unable to attend.
