Electron Microscope Laboratory

EM is widely used for evaluating morphologic findings at subcellular level in both normal and diseased states. The Electron Microscope (EM) is located in a centralized research and teaching facility that provides transmission electron microscopy services for biomedical investigators. The facility houses an Hitachi H-7000 transmission electron microscope and Porter Blum ultramicrotomes MT-2.

The facility has a support staff knowledgeable in the operation of these instruments as well as in preparation of specimens, including appropriate fixing, plastic embedding and thick- and thin-sectioning. In addition, the staff is skilled in all aspects of image processing, printing and analysis. Tissue specimens are submitted to the EM staff for processing and imaging.

The EM facility is located in the Department of Pathology in the university’s Basic Sciences Building and is open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
