The Medical Student Research Forum is open to all NYMC students who have performed research in any capacity during or before medical school. Research must be submitted in either of two categories: Basic Science Research and Clinical Research.
You have the choice of participating in two ways:
1. You can submit an abstract (see deadlines below) and then participate in the preliminary rounds. 3 students will be chosen for two categories, basic science and clinical research (6 students total). If not chosen, we ask that you still share your research in the poster session!
2. You can also just submit a poster for the poster session (see deadlines, as they are different). These are also divided into the basic science and clinical science categories.
The Medical Student Research Forum offers a first-place prize of $500, a second-place prize of $300, and a third-place prize of $200 in each category. All six winners receive recognition of their achievement in their Dean’s Letters at NYMC. Students enter the forum by submitting an abstract and presenting a 10-minute PowerPoint presentation at the preliminary rounds on January 14 and 15, 2009. Abstracts are due by 11:59 pm on January 2, 2009 by email to firstname.lastname@example.org . Abstract guidelines are explained in the “download the requirements” pdf.
Based on the abstract and preliminary round presentation, faculty judges and expert student judges will choose six contestants (three with clinical research projects and three with basic science projects) to present orally at the forum on February 5, 2009. Alternatively, contestants may be selected to present a poster at the poster session which occurs earlier in the morning on February 5, 2009. The first-place poster winners from each category will receive $200, and the second-place poster winners will receive $150. Both with be recognized in their Dean’s Letters.
Students may also enter the poster session only, without submitting an abstract or going through the preliminary rounds, by notifying email@example.com by January 31, 2009 at 11:59 PM.
New for this year, the committee has decided to arrange two additional awards: Dean’s Award for Research Excellence at New York Medical College, and the Students’ Choice Award.
The Dean’s Award will be given to one student who presents and poster and to one student who gives an oral presentation who must have conducted their research at NYMC. The highest scores from the judges will be used. The award will include a $150 prize.
The Students’ Choice Award will be given to one student who presents and poster and to one student who gives an oral presentation, as voted by their classmates by ballot vote. The award will include a $50 prize.
