Curriculum Residents are accepted into the diagnostic radiology residency program after at least one year in clinical medical or surgical residency. During the first year of radiology training, emphasis is placed on cross-sectional, fluoroscopic, and trauma imaging, with introductions to other subspecialties. Constant resident-attending contact is always. Beginning in the first academic year, teams of senior and junior residents ("buddy call") interpret on-call examinations together. Night call begins in the second year. Responsibilities given to junior residents gradually increase so that they function at or
near fellowship level by the fourth year. Residents are evaluated after each rotation, and all evaluations are formally discussed with each resident biannually. Resident salaries are mandated by contract to be among the top five within the State of New York. The starting first year salary is $59,188 and increases to $68,413 for the fourth year. Moonlighting opportunities are available. Residents can choose when to use four weeks of paid vacation each year. Subsidized apartment housing is available, although many residents choose to live off campus. Radiology residents are required to attend daily lectures by the faculty and monthly supplemental lectures by six visiting professors
and board examiners. In addition, monthly radiology-pathology conferences provide an essential complement to the departmental lectures. All residents attend the four-week course at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP) in Washington, D.C. before completing their training. During their third and fourth years, each resident is entitled to attend two national radiology conferences and/or board review courses, funded by our department. A few graduates have gone into private practice, but most have entered excellent fellowship positions.
