New York Medical College, one of the nation’s largest private health sciences universities, is located in Valhalla, New York, just 30 minutes north of New York City. We have an extensive network of affiliated hospitals includes large urban medical centers, small suburban hospitals and technologically advanced, regional tertiary care facilities throughout New York, New Jersey, Connecticut tri-sate area. These facilities afford a breadth of learning opportunities and experiences.
New York Medical College offers a variety of clinical and research electives to visiting students in their final year of undergraduate training. The application procedures for these rotations varies by hospital, as some applications are controlled centrally through the medical school (and VSAS), while others are handled by the individual clinical affiliates. Please see below for additional instructions.
FOR VISITING STUDENTS FROM LCME – ACCREDITED MEDICAL SCHOOLS:
New York Medical College will be participating as a Host School in VSAS, the Visiting Student Application Service of the AAMC, to receive visiting student applications for the 2012-2013 academic year. VSAS applications will only be utilized for the following three affiliates:
Westchester Medical Center
New York Eye & Ear Infirmary
Metropolitan Hospital Center
Requests for electives at one of these three sites may be submitted through VSAS starting on May 15th. To view electives at one of these three sites please see our elective catalog.
To apply to our school, please complete and send us a VSAS application for your preferred electives and dates. Please note that VSAS can only be used by students from LCME – accredited medical schools.

FOR VISITING STUDENTS FROM OSTEOPATHIC MEDICAL SCHOOLS (American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine):
If you are matriculated at an Osteopathic medical school and are applying for an elective at:
Westchester Medical Center,
New York Eye & Ear Infirmary,
Metropolitan Hospital Center,
please download and use the Visiting Student Application Form and the Visiting Student Health Status Form found in the elective catalog.
Osteopathic applicants must also submit the following materials with their application before an elective can be approved:
- A letter from the Dean or other appropriate official of the student’s medical school indicating that the student is currently enrolled, is in good standing, and has permission for the elective at NYMC.
- Medical school transcript
- Proof of malpractice insurance
- Proof of health insurance
- proof of HIPAA training
- proof of Infection Control and Barrier Protection Certification
- Copy of Health Insurance Card

FOR VISITING STUDENTS FROM FOREIGN MEDICAL SCHOOLS:
The College has student exchange programs with four foreign medical schools:
Tokai University School of Medicine in Japan
The Catholic University of Korea in Seoul
Semmelweis University in Hungary
The Hebrew University School of Medicine in Israel.
Under exchange agreements with these schools, full-time students in good standing may be accepted for one or more electives at the College. Electives may not exceed 12 weeks under any circumstances.
The College will not accept elective applications from students from international medical schools, except the four cited above.
