Dear Applicant,

As mentioned in your invitation e-mail, you have the option of staying with one of our student hosts. To do this, please make the arrangements directly with the student at least one week in advance. Barring exams and vacations, they will make every effort to be available. It may be difficult to find an available host right before and after vacations, which are:

December 20 – January 6 First-year class winter recess
December 20 – January 6 Second-year class winter recess
March 21 – March 30 First-year class spring recess
March 21 – March 30 Second-year class spring recess

Just a word or two about being a good guest. Our students volunteer to be overnight hosts. They do it to help you and to contribute to our work in admissions. Please don’t take advantage of their generosity. They expect your visit to be for one night. If you would like to stay for a second night (for example, to arrive on Saturday for a Monday interview), you can ask your host if it would be convenient. But be prepared for a possible "no" and make alternative plans (see: Hotels). Hosts are not expected to provide meals.

Keep in mind that our interview schedule is very tight. We ask you to:

  • First, schedule your interview with the Office of Admissions.
  • Second, make your overnight arrangements directly with either a student or a local hotel.

Unless it’s absolutely unavoidable, please do not change your interview once it has been scheduled.

Thanks for your cooperation. We are looking forward to your visit.

Sincerely,

Laurie Sullivan, PhD, LCSW
Assistant Dean of Admissions

TRAVELING TO NYMC: There are four airports in the area. Westchester county Airport (HPN) is only about 15 minutes from the campus, however it is relatively small and flights are relatively expensive. LaGuardia (LGA) airport is about 45 minutes from campus. Kennedy (JFK) and Newark (EWR) are both about one hour from campus. Travel time varies greatly with traffic. More information is available on the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey website, including ground transportation directly from the airports to the train terminal as well as to the campus. When you click on the Port Authority website, go to “Select Airport” then go to “Getting From and To Your Airport”, then select “Transportation Options” and follow your selected destination from there.

To travel as inexpensively as possible, we recommend travel by train to Westchester from Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan. Metro-North Railroad runs trains from Grand Central Station to White Plains or North White Plains stations on the Harlem Line. Train schedules are available on the Metro North website. Train fare (one-way) is approximately $5.00 off peak, and $6.50 peak one-way to White Plains. The train ride is one hour and the taxi ride about 10 minutes. If you are arriving the morning of your interview, it is best to get off at White Plains station and take a taxi to New York Medical Administration Building on the grounds of Westchester Medical Center.

TAXI SERVICES: Taxis are usually at the White Plains Train station. If you are arriving in Valhalla or North White Plains it will probably be necessary that you call a cab. Here are the numbers of a few companies and approximate fares for an individual (an additional passenger is usually $2.00 extra).

BUS SERVICES: The Bee-Line System runs local buses from Metro-North train stations and other locations around Westchester County. For schedule information call (914) 682-2020. One way fare is approximately $1.75. More information is available on the Bee-Line System website.

**All prices listed above are valid as of July 2006 and subject to change without notice.

PARKING ON CAMPUS: Free Parking is available for invited applicants. The Office of Admissions cannot reimburse you for parking in a paid lot. After viewing the on-line campus map follow the directions below to the free visitor parking spaces. View driving and parking instructions here.

WEATHER: In the fall or spring (September-November; April-June), it might be wise to bring a light jacket and umbrella. In the winter (December-March), it can be cold, snowy, or icy; therefore, a heavier coat and boots are advisable. A portion of our interview day includes a tour with some walking outdoors.
