Alumni Association - School of Medicine
President's Message

Dear Fellow Alumnus/i,

It has been my pleasure to serve on the Board of Governors of New York Medical College Alumni Associations since 1997. Being named to the Executive Committee as President-elect several years ago has allowed me firsthand experience in governance by those most dedicated to the advancement of New York Medical College and our Alumni Association. I would like to inform you that our College and Alumni Association are entrusted to very competent and devoted people. I share in this devotion and am honored to serve as President of the Board of Governors. I want to personally thank Dr. Louis E. Fierro '60 for his service as President for the past five years. Due to his leadership of the Board, the Alumni Association is sound and enjoys a close relationship with the College. Working together the College and the Alumni Association will continue to provide opportunities for alumni to gather at regional receptions across the country as well as at the annual Alumni banquet and awards presentation held in New York City. Additionally, the Alumni Association supports an annual CME conference and a yearly New York area golf benefit. I invite all of you to attend as many of these events as possible and please include your families.

The Alumni Association collects annual dues which support programs for our current students including the acclaimed Student Physician Awareness Day (SPAD), a welcoming gift for first year students, yearbook contributions, an internal medicine summer intern scholarship, and perhaps most significantly, sponsorship of all graduating medical students at the annual Alumni banquet. Your annual dues are vital in maintaining these programs and are a great way of showing your support of the Alumni Association of New York Medical College. If our dues letter is not reaching you, please contact us via phone or this website so that we can include you in all of our correspondence.

Please remember that although your annual dues are important in underwriting the programs for our current students, our College needs your financial support as well. New York Medical College's Annual Fund has traditionally benefited from the generosity of the alumni. As your president, I would ask that you continue to help the College in its fundraising efforts. If you have not already done so, please make a donation to the Annual Fund.

Lastly, if you are reading this message on our website, click on the "What's New with You" link and tell us who you are, how you are and where you are. The Board of Governors cares for all of the alumni and wants to hear from as many of you as possible. If we can help you contact your long lost classmate or inform them of your personal and professional achievements, the Alumni Association is your perfect resource.

I hope to meet as many of you as possible at an alumni event in the future.

Respectfully,

Christopher F.X. Riegler, M.D. '88

Alumni Association - School of Medicine
General Information

The Alumni Association is an advocate for improved communications among alumni of the School of Medicine. Founded in 1883, two decades after the College began, the Association engages in activities designed to foster relationships among alumni and between alumni and the College.

Whether exchanging ideas or information, organizing continuing medical education seminars, improving educational opportunities for today's medical students or enhancing the school's reputation, the Alumni Association is a vital component of university life.

Alumni Association leadership endeavors to present a variety of activities each year in the interest of encouraging increasing numbers of alumni to become more actively involved. In an especially important role, the Association encourages alumni to support the university's continued progress through financial contributions. In recent years, the Alumni Association has raised significant funds for critical university and School of Medicine priorities, among them an endowed chair in biochemistry and molecular biology (the university's first in the basic sciences), an endowed scholarship fund for medical students, a computer center, modernization of the campus health service facility, and currently, the Alumni Gross Anatomy Laboratory.

Membership Dues

The Alumni Association collects annual dues which are $35 for the first five years following graduation, $75 thereafter and $1,000 for lifetime membership. These funds support Alumni Association sponsored programs, including the acclaimed Student Physician Awareness Day, a welcoming reception for first year students during orientation, yearbook contributions, a scholarship for a summer internship in internal medicine, and perhaps most importantly, sponsorship of all graduating medical students attendance at the annual alumni banquet.

About the Alumni Center

The Alumni Center is a white colonial farmhouse said to date from pre-Revolutionary times. During the twentieth century, the structure was occupied by the Westchester County Commissioner of Health and subsequently, by the family of the County Commissioner of Public Welfare (1944-1960).
For a period of years thereafter, the house stood abandoned but, due to the remarkable integrity of its reinforced concrete walls, it found use by the Fire Safety Training Unit--for firefighting practice. As the building was being considered for demolition, the Alumni Association proposed renovating it and pledged to raise the necessary funds to do so. A lease was signed between the College and Westchester County in 1982 and plans for renovation were drawn.

The alumni raised more than $300,000 toward the project and the building was faithfully restored using methods and materials consistent with those employed in the original construction. Several alumni contributed significant sums to advance the venture; others donated a rare oriental rug, a piano and several paintings. The Alumni Association Board of Governors held their first meeting in the newly refurbished Alumni Center in March 1984 and the group continues to meet there to this day. It is an essential first stop for alumni visiting campus. Please call ahead and be assured of an always-gracious welcome! (914/594-4556)

Regional Meetings

The Office of Alumni Relations hosts regional meetings periodically. Alumni Association receptions have been hosted in Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Long Island, Miami, West Palm Beach, Atlanta and New York. The Office of Alumni Relations handles all arrangements for these meetings. If you are interested in hosting one in your area, please call the office at (914) 594-4556.

Each year, specialty meetings afford the university and the Alumni Association opportunities to sponsor alumni receptions. These well-attended gatherings enable alumni to make new friends and to reconnect with old ones. At these events the president of New York Medical College and the Alumni Association president report on recent happenings at the university and provide informational updates.

Governance

The Board of Governors is the Alumni Association's governing body, charged with responsibilities that include directing the myriad programs and efforts of the organization. The Board nurtures fellowship and communication among the association's membership, provides programs of continuing medical education, and sponsors programs for the medical school student body. Governors serve two-year terms and are elected at an annual meeting held on the Valhalla campus. All alumni are cordially invited to attend this event and are encouraged to seek a higher level of commitment to New York Medical College. Past Alumni Association presidents hold governor status in perpetuity.

Medal of Honor

Purpose

The first known presentation of the Alumni Association's Medal of Honor dates back to 1948. For more than half a century, the Medal has recognized the singular achievements of distinguished alumni. Those chosen for the award are highly regarded by their alumni peers and are a special inspiration to new School of Medicine graduates attending the Annual Alumni Banquet at the Plaza Hotel in New York City in May where the award is presented. The medal, a three-inch, solid bronze die-struck medallion with a caduceus, is the highest recognition awarded by the Alumni Association. Recipients may be from any field of medicine; particular emphasis is placed on academic achievement. The Board of Governors makes the final selection from among each year's nominated candidates.

Criteria for Nomination

Candidates for the Alumni Association Medal of Honor must be graduates of the School of Medicine of New York Medical College, have made significant contributions to the field of medicine and be recognized for their academic achievements.

Nominations are welcome. To propose a name for nomination online, please provide the information requested by October 1st. Any nominations received after this date will be considered for the subsequent year.
