Preparedness for Special Populations -
Children
A primary focus of the Center for Disaster Medicine, is
addressing the unique needs of special and vulnerable populations, such
as children, persons with disabilities, and the elderly. Three of the
leading national experts on pediatric emergency preparedness, Drs.
Rob Amler,
David Markenson, and
Sherlita Amler are core Center faculty and
former CDC panelists. They each have a unique expertise in identifying
the needs of vulnerable populations (especially children) in
emergencies. Their expertise allows them to assist public health and
health care systems, and the emergency preparedness community in
addressing these unique issues in planning, mitigation and response to
disasters and emergencies.
In addition to expert faculty, the Center for Disaster Medicine is
affiliated with and adjacent to two specialized clinical facilities –
Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital and the
Westchester Institute for
Human Development. Specialists at these facilities assist in the further
development of preparedness and response paradigms for children and
persons with disabilities, including model best practices for children’s
hospitals and university-affiliated Centers for Excellence in
Disabilities.
