Dr. Gillick won an award for his presentation entitled “Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells and Curcumin Enhance Recovery from Spinal Cord Injury by Altering the Immune Response” at the New York state Neurosurgery Annual Meeting, held at Harvard Club of NYC on Friday, June 3, 2016. His work was done under the supervision of Dr. Meena Jhanwar-Uniyal.

John L Gillick, M.D., PGY V, Department of Neurosurgery. gave talk entitled "Targeting Glioblastoma and Its Stem Cells Using Novel Small Molecule Inhibitors of the mTOR Pathway", at The AANS/CNS Section on Tumors, 11th Biennial Satellite Symposium on May 1-2 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C, just prior to the 2015 AANS Annual Scientific Meeting, where the leadership of this meeting considered his abstract for oral Presentation. This work was done under the supervision of Dr. Meena Jhanwar-Uniyal, Associate Professor, Department of Neurosurgery.

Craig Shannon, M.D., PGY V, Department of Neurosurgery gave his NREF research fellowship award talk entitled "Treatment of Spinal Cord Injury Utilizing Stem Cell Therapy in Conjunction with Anti-Inflammatory Compounds", at the NREF/AANS award talks ceremony in Washington, D.C, on May 5th, 2015. Dr. Shannon is recipient of Research Fellowships and Young Clinician Investigator Awards of Neurological Research and Education Foundation/AANS. Dr. Meena Jhanwar-Uniyal, Associate Professor, Department of Neurosurgery, was the mentor for this fellowship grant.

Michael Labagnara, M.D., PGY V, received the Resident Research Award for his outstanding presentation at the New York State Neurological Society Annual Meeting held on June 6th, 2014. He presented his research entitled "Characterization of Glioblastoma Multiforme Cancer Stem Cells by PTEN and its Downstream Signaling Pathways: Potential Targets of Therapy", done under the mentorship of Dr. Meena Jhanwar-Uniyal, Associate Professor, Department of Neurosurgery.
Dr. LaBagnara was recognized in New York Medical College's weekly Newsletter In Touch, for this accomplishment.

PGY V Resident, Micheal LaBagnara, M.D., has won The Anna Samartzis Research Excellence Award for Best Basic Science Research Paper at the 11th Annual Louis R.M Del Guercio Surgical Research Day hosted by New York Medical College on December 18th, 2013 for his work on Glioblastoma Cancer Stem Cells.
