Hospital Affiliates Westchester Medical Center (WMC) is a tertiary care facility that is a level I trauma center serving the entire lower Hudson Valley Region with a resultant high volume of facial and ocular injuries. On the campus is a pediatric specialty hospital, an inpatient psychiatric center and a county jail, all of which are served by the ophthalmology department. The residents get exposure to a high volume of both service and private patients, and many elective procedures. This rotation offers exposure to ocular pathology of systemic diseases such in an active hospital in-patient consult service monitored by a full-time ophthalmologist. There is a modern, extensive library with state of the art computer facilities. Closely associated with WMC is the Basic Sciences building of the New York Medical College. It affords access to benchwork research conducted by professors who use ocular tissue in their projects. Residents have access to surgical dissection in the anatomy and wet lab and also to pathological specimens. The department has a room dedicated to the residents use for meetings, conferences, internet access and socializing. Metropolitan Hospital Center is a large inner city level I trauma center. This facility offers a tremendous volume of diverse surgical procedures. The demographics of the population expose the surgeon not only to the basic necessities of training but also to unique tropical diseases of the eye usually only seen in books or heard about in lectures. The large number of patients and their diverse pathology produce an excellent source for research projects and publications. Dedicated faculty supervise the residents in the clinic and in the operating room when the residents are the primary surgeons.
