to the home page of the Department of Family and Community Medicine at New York
Medical College. Family and Community Medicine is an active, dynamic
department which is involved in pre-doctoral training right fro Valhalla is also home to Westchester Medical Center; a tertiary referral center with just about every medical specialty represented. Family and Community Medicine holds its own very well, as a training ground for both primary care and coordination of effective care. With an enthusiastic, able faculty, and preceptor sites in almost all boroughs of New York City and Westchester County, the department offers primary care clinical experience in a wide variety of practice settings. Third year students do four weeks of generalist training in the Department of Family and Community Medicine. This rotation offers ample opportunities in ambulatory care experience as well as small group teaching and individualized training. It also allows for experience in specialized primary care settings like substance abuse programs, HIV infections and office procedures. Preventive intervention, screening for common diseases and public health issues are emphasized. The Department of Family and Community Medicine sponsors the Family Medicine residency program at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Yonkers, the Family Medicine residency program in Phelps Memorial Hospital, in Sleepy Hollow, NY and the Family Medicine residency program at Hoboken University Medical Center, Hoboken, NJ. St. Joseph's is a community hospital, affiliated with New York Medical College which has Family Medicine as a stand alone residency program. Residents are encouraged to build their own practice, with faculty supervision in the state of the art Thomas and Agnes Carvel Foundation Family Health Center.
