Melissa Gennarelli, M.D.
New York Medical College
Westchester Medical Center
Dr. Melissa Gennarelli is a general internist, with a particular interest in resident education. Dr. Gennarelli is an Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine at New York Medical College and an academic hospitalist at Westchester Medical Center since 2003. More recently, Dr. Gennarelli has become an Associate Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program at the medical center. Dr. Gennarelli is a mentor to both residents and medical students on a daily basis in their care of medical inpatients. Her strict attention to detail and patient care has sometimes prompted use of the nickname “the General” by her residents. However, they admire and try to emulate her patient care skills and many choose her as their personal internist in her outpatient faculty practice.
Dr. Gennarelli earned a Bachelor of Science, magna cum laude, from Fairfield University in 1995 and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa that same year. She attended medical school at New York Medical College, graduating as a member of Alpha Omega Alpha in 1999. Dr. Gennarelli completed her internship and residency in internal medicine at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in 2003. This included one year as a post-doctoral research fellow at the Ruttenberg Cancer Center. Her research on colorectal cancer screening done during this time was published in 2005.
Specialists in internal medicine are commonly called internists. Because their patients are often seriously ill or require complex investigations, internists do much of their work in hospitals. In modern practice, most internists are subspecialists: that is, they generally limit their medical practice to problems of one organ system or to one particular area of medical knowledge.
