The Cardiology Division facilities and equipment include three modern cardiac catheterization angiographic laboratories where over 3,500 procedures are performed annually. In addition to standard catheterization, streptokinase and tissue plasminogen activator infusion for acute coronary disease and transluminal angioplasty are performed. Facilities are also available for intracoronary stents, laser atherectomy and directed coronary atherectomy. A fully-equipped electrophysiology laboratory is available for study of patients with complex cardiac rhythm disturbances and conduction defects. Cardiac intensive care facilities include an eight bed acute care unit and a 14 bed step-down unit. Percutaneous intra-aortic balloon counter pulsation is available for cardiac pump failure and intractable myocardial ischemia. The non-invasive cardiology area includes phonocardiography, vectorcardiography, signal averaged EKGs, exercise stress testing, 24-hour ambulatory electrocardiographic monitoring and both M-mode and two-dimensional echocardiography as well as transesophageal echocardiography. The nuclear cardiology service has three portable gamma cameras with computer capabilities for rest and exercise gated nuclear left ventriculography and thallium myocardial perfusion scanning. Residents are assigned to the cardiology service in the PGY-II year and are exposed to all diagnostic and therapeutic modalities.
