The Department of
Microbiology and Immunology currently consists of dedicated faculty, research staff and Ph.D. candidates. The department has recently undergone expansion by
adding new faculty with a strong research focus on microbial pathogenesis. The
department is housed in the Basic Science Building in 12,500 sq ft of space.
Faculty funding for support of research is about $3.9 M. The Department is well
equipped for modern molecular microbiology and immunology research including an
Applied Biosystems 7900 HT Real-time PCR system (Taqman), a Zeiss Axiovert 200
motorized microscope for Brightfield, phase contrast, DIC and fluorescence
microscopy, a GenePix 4000B microarray scanner, bioinformatics software for
microarray analysis and a newly constructed Biosafety level-3 laboratory.
The Department maintains strong academic and research ties to clinical
departments, particularly Medicine and Pediatrics.
The Department of
Microbiology and Immunology offers Ph.D. and M.S. degrees and there are also
opportunities for post doctoral training.
