Message From The Chairman

Welcome to the Department of Neurosurgery and the Neurosurgical Residency Training Program at New York Medical College. New York Medical College and Westchester Medical Center are located in Valhalla, New York about 20 miles north of Manhattan. The Medical College is a medical university, training medical students and offering graduate level programs in basic sciences that relate to medicine and public health. Westchester Medical Center and Saint Vincent’s Hospital Manhattan are the two academic health centers of New York Medical College. Together they provide a full mix of urban and suburban neurosurgery. Both hospitals have independent departments of neurosurgery with their own chairmen, dedicated floor, ICU, operating rooms, and supporting infrastructure. The Department has close liaisons with neuro-radiology, neuro-pathology, and many of the basic science departments at the Medical College.

The residency program was initially approved in 1991 and is fully accredited. We pride ourselves on our collegiality and good communication between the faculty and residents. The program, which accepts one resident per year, consists of six years of neurosurgery, with the first year as a rotation in general surgery and neurology. One full year of training is spent at Saint Vincent’s Hospital Manhattan. Research and publications, teaching and training, patient care and bedside manner all are emphasized equally during training. Two of our residents have won first prize and two have won second prize from the New York Society for Neurosurgery for the best resident research. Our graduating residents have obtained fellowship positions in subspecialties of neurosurgery at institutions such as UCLA, Cleveland Clinic, the Barrow Neurological Institute, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and the University of Utah.

A state-of-the-art Children’s Hospital in Westchester has recently opened, which is a major resource for training in pediatric neurosurgery. A research scientist is a member of the Department. We have a departmental editor to facilitate publications. The faculty and I invite you to visit the Department, meet with us and with our residents, and experience the friendly atmosphere under which the Department runs and training takes place. You will not be disappointed.
