Teaching

The goal of the New York Medical College neurosurgery residency program is to train physicians to become highly skilled and compassionate neurosurgeons who are prepared to enter careers in academic neurosurgery. Specific goals to be obtained by the end of the program include the following:

Patient Care

  • The skill to integrate neuroimaging, neuropathology, and neurology with neurosurgical practice in developing patient treatment plans

  • Knowledge of clinical neurosurgery and the judgment to apply it

  • Proficiency with neurosurgical operative techniques

Medical Knowledge

  • Development of a comprehensive fund of neuroscience knowledge

Practice-Based Learning and Improvement

  • Understanding of basic research and analytical skills

Interpersonal and Communication Skills

  • Acquisition of humanistic patient care skills

  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a healthcare team

Professionalism

  • Understanding of the ethical aspects and cultural components of neurosurgical care

Systems-Based Practice

  • Understanding of the administrative and financial aspects of neurosurgery practice
