Westchester
Medical Center is a 668 bed hospital located on the campus and near
the Basic Sciences Building of New York Medical College, which
houses the research and undergraduate teaching facilities of the
Department of Pathology. The Medical Center serves as a referral
center for the region comprising seven counties to the north of New
York City. Approximately 16,000 surgical specimens, 110 autopsies,
and approximately 8,000,000 clinical laboratory tests are accessed
each year. The new Maria Fareri Children's Hospital which opened in
September, 2004, adjoins the main hospital and is an architecturally
unique, "kid-friendly" three story building of 200,000 sq. ft. with
114 acute care beds.
Programs Offered
Fully approved pathology residency programs are offered in anatomic
pathology, clinical pathology (three years) and combined anatomic
and clinical pathology (four years). The residents are assigned to
anatomic pathology or clinical pathology in alternate years.
Anatomic pathology training includes surgical pathology, autopsy
pathology, hematopathology, renal pathology, and neuropathology,
immunohistochemical and electron microscopic applications in
diagnostic pathology, and rotations in cytopathology, cytogenetics
including molecular genetics, and forensic pathology. The integrated
two-year program of clinical pathology encompasses clinical
chemistry, hematology, transfusion medicine, transplant immunology,
flow cytometry, medical microbiology, immunology, serology and
laboratory management.
All pathology residents are expected to undertake some investigative
studies during the four-year program, some of which may lead to
publication. For residents who wish to gain additional experience in
pathology research, the Valhalla campus and the Cancer Research
Institute offer the opportunity to participate in a number of
ongoing projects under the direction of a departmental faculty
member. The residents have full access to the library facilities of
New York Medical College and access to medical literature through
computers in the Residents' room. They attend monthly meetings of
New York Pathological Society and Westchester Pathology Society in
addition to daily departmental conferences and certain clinical
conferences. In their senior year residents may attend a national
meeting at hospital expense; expenses may be covered by the
department for other national meetings at which the resident
presents research papers or posters. The Chief Resident and
qualified senior residents may receive appointments as Instructors
in the Medical College and participate in the education of sophomore
medical students.
Types
and Numbers of Appointments
Nine positions
are available at the Valhalla Campus: generally two PGY-1 openings
are offered each July. Residents in the Valhalla program are
assigned full time to Westchester Medical Center. All elective and
required rotations including forensic pathology and cytogenetics are
offered within the campus.
Stipends
and Maintenance
Stipends are
competitive with other academic institutions. A limited number of
on-campus apartments are available for married house staff at the
Westchester campus. All staff members are provided with professional
liability insurance, hospitalization and medical care, uniforms and
uniform laundry.

Applications
Candidates must be graduates of approved schools in the U.S. or Canada, or foreign medical graduations of approved schools and have passed Step 1, Step 2 and Step 3 of the USMLE. Foreign medical graduates must have an
appropriate Visa. Satisfactory references are required. Applicants
for the first year positions should apply through ERAS. We
participate in the

Those applications with USMLE scores above 80 in each part will be
given favorable consideration. July 1 is the normal beginning date
for residencies.
