Program Director's Message
We welcome your interest in our Psychiatric Residency Training Program at Westchester Medical Center, in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at New York Medical College. Your future in psychiatry can be enhanced through our training program with exposure to a very diverse patient population and an emphasis on the biopsychosocial model. Our residents have broad-based clinical training in multiple settings. Residents treat geriatric and adult patients as well as adolescents and children. Evidence-based clinical work encompasses diagnosis, psychiatric management, psychopharmacology, somatic, and psychotherapeutic treatment modalities. Residents learn in the emergency room, inpatient, outpatient, consultation-liaison, general medical, and pediatric settings. Residents receive supervision from a talented, dedicated faculty and have opportunities to engage in clinical research projects. Our didactic curriculum covers all psychiatric disorders and the major treatment modalities. The program is offered in a progressive, collegial atmosphere while embracing new challenges to our field. In addition to our four-year adult psychiatric residency training program, we also have fellowships in child and adolescent psychiatry and psychosomatic medicine. Psychoanalytic courses taken by residents trained in either adult or child may be integrated into a separate advanced psychoanalytic training program or a selective during the PGY4 year. We are especially seeking self-motivated, inquisitive, and proactive residents. We encourage our residents to engage with each other and the faculty. Through this dynamic interaction, residents will help shape their educational experience. I welcome your interest and enthusiasm for psychiatry. I look forward to meeting you and discussing your future in our program. Sincerely, Wendy L. Thompson, M.D. Telephone: (914) 493-1939
