Research

Our mission at New York Medical College is to provide the best in patient care and education and to stimulate an interest in research. Dr. Ralph A. O'Connell, former Dean and Provost of New York Medical College was recently appointed Vice Chairman for Research in order to assure Departmental participation in current, meaningful clinical research. The Department of Psychiatry has recently established an affiliation with the Nathan Kline Institute, a world-renowned psychiatric research facility located on the grounds of Rockland Psychiatric Center. Residents at the Westchester Medical Center psychiatry residency program can take electives at NKI, affording them the opportunity to work with top researchers in the field of psychiatry. Additionally, plans are underway in conjunction with the Touro Department of Neuropsychology for a research project on cognitive rehabilitation of patients with schizophrenia. There are additional opportunities for clinical research with other departments, such as a project for screening mothers of infants in the NICU for depression.

Graduates of our residency have gone on to careers in research; one recent graduate is currently at NIMH.
