PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
The New York
Medical College Residency Training Program in Geriatric
Psychiatry is a one-year ACGME approved program offering
comprehensive training in geriatric psychiatry.
There are
four residency positions in the program, which are divided
into a southern and a northern
track. There are two residents in the southern track
and two residents in the northern track. There are four
participating institutions:
- Hudson River Psychiatric Center (HRPC)
- Westchester Medical Center (WMC)
- VA Hudson Valley Health Care System
(VA)
- Kateri Residence, a nursing home in
Manhattan
In both tracks,
the residents have the same clinical rotations- inpatient,
nursing home, outpatient, consultation, and community
rotations, as well as a research experience. For the
southern track residents, the inpatient, outpatient,
consultation, and community rotations take place at
SVCMC. Kateri Residence is the site of the nursing home
rotation.
For the northern
track residents, the inpatient and nursing home rotations
take place at the VA, the consultation rotation occurs
at WMC, the community rotation takes place at HRPC and
SVCMC is the site of the outpatient rotation. The northern
track residents spend four days per week for six months
at the VA. During the other six-month block, they are
at WMC for three days per week and HRPC for one day
per week.
The residents
have a similar clinical experience in both tracks, with
a comparable patient case mix. All of the residents
also have a supervised research experience.
All of the
residents meet
one day per week for most of their didactic activities,
including classes, case conferences, grand rounds, and
supervision. Classes include courses in pharmacotherapy,
psychotherapy, minority and cultural issues, ethical
and legal issues,. a geriatrics seminar, electroconvulsive
therapy, palliative care, a journal club, geriatric
neurology, and research methodology. Case conferences
include inpatient, outpatient, primary care, and geriatric
medicine.
In addition
to an annual salary, all resident receive a comprehensive
benefits package, which includes medical, dental, and
prescription coverage, as vacation, personal, sick days
and holidays.
