New York Medical College (NYMC) offers a three-year residency training program in physical medicine and rehabilitation. The program has a proven track record of educating residents to a high level of clinical and academic proficiency.
Two to three residents are recruited each year and enter at the PGY-2 level (having completed one year of internal medicine, family medicine or surgery). The 36 months, PGY-2, PGY-3, PGY-4, are devoted primarily to rehabilitation rotations.
The residency program of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at New York Medical College is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
Lectures and Activities
The didactic portion of the residency consists of a broad range of topics and activities. The program is based on the educational guidelines set by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
Program Summary
Weekly didactic lectures by a faculty member. The series is completed in 18 months and covers such topics as:
Grand Rounds include presentations by experts from other departments covering topics of interest to the residents and faculty, and are accredited Continuing Medical Education (CME) activities in Category I for the Physician’s Recognition Award of the American Medical Association.
Resident Grand Rounds cases are presented weekly by the residents with faculty present for questions and answers.
Electromyography group training sessions are held weekly facilitated by a certified faculty member.
A ratio of 1:1 attending to residents permits close supervision and individualized instruction for each resident.
The residency program participates in ERAS (electronic residency application service). Eligible candidates enter at the PGY-2 level, having completed a PGY-1 year in Medicine, Surgery or Family Medicine.
