The Pediatric Pulmonology, Allergy and Sleep Medicine division is dedicated to research at all levels, from the bench to the bedside. In recognition of our expertise in clinical research, we were invited to join the American Lung Association (ALA) Asthma Clinical Center Network when it began in 1999. The American Lung Association has continuously funded this nationwide network of research centers dedicated to conducting real-world clinical research in asthma and related conditions.

We are one of only 20 centers nationwide with this designation. Furthermore, we are one of only 5 pediatric centers in the network.

This network has been highly successful, and has completed seven large placebo-controlled blinded studies, most of which have been funded not only by the ALA, but also by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). These studies have all been published in internationally recognized, highly prestigious medical journals.

NYMC is an active participant in these studies. Dr. Dozor, the Principal Investigator for the center, is on several committees for the network, including the Executive Committee, the Protocol Committee and the Manuscript Writing Committee.

For the recently concluded SARCA study (study of acid reflux in asthma), NYMC was a “vanguard site”. Ongoing trials include SOYA (study of soy supplements in asthma) and STAN (study of treatment of allergic rhinitis in asthma). A proposed study by NYMC - SATIN (study of treatment of infants and young children with asthma) is under consideration for a network-wide trial. Fellows participate in these studies and learn the nuances of large randomized multi-center trials.
