Harlem Hospital Center (HHC) is a participating institution along with Metropolitan Hospital Center, part of south Manhattan health care network. Along with Bellevue is the largest network within the Health and Hospital Corporation. Harlem Hospital Center serves the Harlem community and northern Manhattan. HHC is a 400-bed Level I trauma and burn center with 77,000 annual ED visits. Approximately 22% of the ED patients present with traumatic injuries. Approximately 6,800 patients go straight to the operating room from the ED. The SICU and burn unit has approximately 588 and 65 admissions per year respectively. The ED is staffed by 14 ABEM certified and 3 EM prepared attendings 24-hours per day. HHC provides an excellent opportunity for EM residents to train in penetrating trauma.
