Jennifer Canter, M.D., M.P.H., F.A.A.P., C.L.C.P. is board certified as a General Pediatrician and subspecialty board certified in Child Abuse/Forensic Pediatrics. Dr. Canter is Professor of Pediatrics at New York Medical College.

Since 2002, Dr. Canter has been the director of clinical and academic programs for forensic/child abuse pediatrics at New York Medical College, The Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at WMCHealth (Westchester Medical Center) and the Westchester Institute of Development’s Child Advocacy Center (CAC). Under her leadership, the clinical programs expanded from a local sexual abuse CAC clinic to a regional clinical and academic leader in the state covering six counties within the Hudson Valley Region of New York with four CAC sites.

Dr. Canter has assessed over 7000 children, adolescents and adults with disabilities with concerns for physical abuse, sexual abuse, neglect and unexpected fatalities. Dr. Canter also serves as medical director of the sexual assault forensic program at WMCHealth; a program evaluating hundreds of adults, adolescents and children presenting with acute forensic needs. Dr Canter serves on the Westchester County Child Fatality Review Team, participating in both the investigative and prevention components of unexpected child fatalities.  She is co-director of Safe Babies NY, a safe sleep and abusive head trauma prevention program in all New York State. Dr. Canter has conceptualized and consulted on various successful legislative efforts in the areas of safe sleep, child abuse education and abusive head trauma. 

Dr. Canter’s research and publications are in the areas of infant fatality prevention, abusive head trauma, sexual abuse, physical abuse, safe infant sleep, missed child abuse and the use of alternate light in the detection of sub-clinical bruising. She regularly trains child protective service professionals, attorneys, judges, law enforcement professionals, teachers, and medical providers and participates on regional, state and national levels in policy development in various areas of child abuse and sexual assault. 

Dr. Canter has well-balanced consulting and expert witness testimony experience in domestic and international criminal, family and civil proceedings in the areas of physical abuse (bruises, burns, fractures, head injury, abdominal injury), neglect (medical neglect, medical child abuse, failure to thrive), fatalities, sexual abuse, sexual assault, abuse in the school setting, abuse in individuals with developmental disabilities and outcomes/future risk of harm subsequent to missed abuse.
