It also allows for experience in specialized primary care settings like substance abuse programs, HIV infections and office procedures. Preventive intervention, screening for common diseases and public health issues are emphasized.

The Department of Family and Community Medicine sponsors the Family Practice residency program at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Yonkers. St. Joseph's is a community hospital, affiliated with New York Medical College which has Family Practice as a stand alone residency program.

This program is the only Family Practice program in Westchester County. Residents are encouraged to build their own practice, with faculty supervision in the state of the art Thomas and Agnes Carvel Foundation Family Health Center.
