New St. Vincent's DNR Policy

As of January 1, 2003, St. Vincent's Hospital--Manhattan has adopted a new DNR policy. Signatures for consenting patients or surrogates are no longer required, the number of DNR forms has been reduced from seven to one, the new form is an order form rather than a consent form, and it allows specification of limits on life sustaining treatments other than CPR, as well as reminders about positive aspects of good quality care for patients at the end of life. Since we think this policy may be useful to other institutions, we are making it available in case other institutions would like to model their own DNR policies on our new policy. This policy is in compliance with the requirements of New York State's DNR laws.
