Location

Campus Life View Towards the Alumni Building‌Since 1971, New York Medical College (NYMC) has been located on a lush 54-acre campus in Valhalla, New York. A fixture in Westchester County in the lower Hudson Valley, only 25 miles north of midtown Manhattan, NYMC provides an ideal base for students who wish to study and practice medicine, conduct research and engage in public health activities.

Our roots go back to 1860 with the founding of the Homeopathic Medical College of New York.  In the following century, NYMC’s identity and reputation evolved through several significant events which expanded the College’s scope and reach, notably:  the 1875 partnership with Metropolitan Hospital Center, an affiliation still in place today which represents the oldest American partnership between a public hospital and a private medical school in the United States; the opening of Flower Free Surgical Hospital in 1890, making the College the first existing medical school to own a hospital; and the subsequent merger with Fifth Avenue Hospital in 1935.

Serving a large and highly diverse geographic area and population, NYMC maintains close ties with local communities and maintains valuable affiliations with several outstanding hospitals and other health care facilities in the area. Having local physicians and health commissioners among our faculty is one example of how NYMC and the region enjoy a symbiotic relationship – each serves and supports the other, and our students and the surrounding communities are the chief beneficiaries.

Living in Westchester

Half an hour from Manhattan yet a world away, Westchester County offers the diversity and culture of New York City with a somewhat slower pace of daily life and fewer crowds. Among the notable people who have called Westchester County home are composer Aaron Copland, patriot Thomas Paine, novelist Washington Irving, former First Lady Barbara Bush, first Chief Justice of the United States John Jay, and former President Bill Clinton and Senator Hillary Clinton.

Our location attracts talented students who prefer a suburban lifestyle but want easy access to the New York metropolitan area. Here, they enjoy rolling hills and downtown streets – abundant sites, great shopping and a picturesque setting that makes their time at New York Medical College an experience they’ll remember for the rest of their lives.

Practicing in the Region

NYMC’s location in Westchester County provides a large and highly diverse catchment area with numerous career, residency, clinical, applied practice experience and internship opportunities. For School of Medicine students, our local affiliate hospitals are some of the finest in the tri-state area, offering exceptional clinical training and experience with diverse populations.

Our close ties with local public health commissioners, research projects involving area institutions, and service opportunities that include volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House of the Greater Hudson Valley and homeless shelters offer students in all three of our schools a unique chance to put their learning into practice, conduct research or interact with patients and professionals in preparation for their future careers.

Visiting NYMC

We ask that all visitors to the campus check in at the Security Office upon arrival. The office is located at the entrance to the Basic Sciences Building. A public safety officer will provide you with a campus map, advise you where to park your vehicle and register you for the day.

We enjoy meeting prospective students at visits to our suburban Valhalla, New York, campus. Due to the sheer number of applicants to the School of Medicine, however, we can only allow invited SOM prospects to visit our campus. If you are applying to the School of Health Sciences and Practice or the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, simply call ahead to schedule your visit and we will be ready to greet you, answer your questions and acquaint you with our offerings.
