 GSA Research Forum

The Graduate Student Research Forum is an annual, daylong event sponsored by the Graduate Student Association. The Forum involves oral and poster presentations of student-conducted research, which provides students with an opportunity to present their research to colleagues, faculty and staff of New York Medical College, and the scientific community in the tri-state area. Funds needed to support this event come in part from local corporations. This event has, over the years, greatly increased the visibility and prestige of the Graduate School of Basic Medical Sciences’ graduate students within the College.

The 20th Annual Graduate Student Research Forum
was a huge success!!

It was held on:

Wednesday, March 26, 2008
Nevins Auditorium, MEC

The Forum Keynote Speakerwas:

Irving H. Zucker, Ph.D. '72
Professor and Chair
Department of Cellular and Integrative Physiology
The University of Nebraska Medical Center

“A Central Role for Angiotensin in the Sympatho-excitation of Chronic Heart Failure.”

Dr. Zucker's research focuses on the role of the central brain mechanisms on neurohormonal adjustments in cardiovascular regulation in the setting of experimental chronic heart failure. He are interested in the role of substances such as angiotensin II, nitric oxide and reactive oxidant stress as important mediators of sympathetic excitation in the setting of chronic heart failure. Molecular, cellular and whole animal techniques are used to understand abnormal cardiovascular and neural regulation in heart failure. In addition, he is extremely interested in the role of exercise training in ameliorating some of the abnormalities we have found in the central nervous system of animals with heart failure.

These techniques are providing important new information about normal cardiovascular physiology and about the pathophysiology of heart failure and other cardiovascular diseases.
