Here are some useful links to sites that contain information about career opportunities and job search strategies in various biomedical science fields. The New York Science Alliance for Graduate Students and Post-Docs. This is a very interesting and useful site with articles on career trends and job search issues. You need to be a member of the New York Academy of Sciences to enter. The Graduate School of NYMC is a member of the Science Alliance, however, and all its graduate students and post-doctoral fellows are eligible to join. (Ask in the GSBMS office for details.) This site also contains news of upcoming Science Alliance events. These may be talks or symposia on contemporary issues in science, workshops on professional development, or sessions that explore various issues related to the everyday life of students and post-docs. Members of the Science Alliance can attend these sessions without charge. Science Next Wave. This comprehensive site contains articles and links about employment trends in science, job search strategies, and other resources. You can also search current job ads from Science magazine. A "must see" site. NIH Virtual Career Center. This site is designed to address the career development needs of all students and professionals in science and medicine, not just members of the NIH community. There are four main sections: Exploring career options, Continuing education, Employment opportunities, and Job search strategies. There are links to a wide variety of career resources throughout the Web. The Career Network of The Chronicle of Higher Education. This site focuses on jobs in higher education, not just limited to science. There are current job listings, but also interesting articles and advice about career choices and search strategies. PhDs.org Science, Math and Engineering Career Resources. This is a collection of articles about employment trends, working conditions, job search advice, etc. related to science, math end engineering. Some articles are useful, some are just amusing. The Scientist. This is a newsy publication about science. You've probably seen it lying around the lab in its print version. There are articles about scientific advances and innovations, funding, "hot" research areas, and other topics of general interest. Under the "Profession" button in the menu, you'll find articles on careers and job search strategies. The National Academies. The National Academies serve as advisors to the nation on science, engineering and medicine. From this homepage, you can link to pages on fellowships, internships, and career opportunities, and further links to important publications from the National Academies on career trends in science and engineering. Careers in Physiology. The American Physiological Society has developed this site with useful articles on careers in physiology and how to pursue them. Much of the information is also relevant to other biomedical disciplines. A unique feature of the site is that is organizes its content based on the user's current educational level - from elementary school through graduate school, and post-doctoring, all the way up to established investigators. Biotechnology Studies and Reports. This site, developed by California State University, Chico, contains interesting articles on career trends and opportunities in the biotechnology industry. It also contains links to some important publications on science careers from The National Academies. Alternative Careers in Biosciences. This site is provided by the Cellular and Molecular Biology Group at Yale University and claims to focus on non-traditional career opportunities for bioscience graduate students and fellows. Many of the links are to fairly traditional organizations, however, like AAAS and FASEB. It is nonetheless a useful site.
