The College Bookstore, located in the Basic Sciences Building, is open Monday through Thursday from 8:30 AM to 6:00 PM, and Friday from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM. Summer hours may vary. Required and recommended texts for all courses are available through the Bookstore, as are school and office supplies.
Alumni Computer Learning Laboratory The Computing Center, located in the Learning Center, is equipped with multiple personal computers and various pieces of video playback equipment. This laboratory is used to teach and assist graduate and medical students in their required courses and electives. Students registered for BMS-1300, Computers in Health Sciences, may meet course requirements by completing the self-study modules. Faculty and staff utilize this facility to learn personal computing and make practical use of the equipment for clinical and research purposes. An extensive library of videotapes on personal computer use in general, and health computing in particular, is available. A complete spectrum of software for general use such as word processing, spreadsheets, graphics, database management and statistical packages is maintained. The latest in microcomputer health-related software such as diagnostics systems, nutritional analyses, and self-help psychological profiles, among others, are also available. The laboratory continues to be developed as an important educational and research resource. The College has an extensive internal wide area computer network offering many services. Public terminals in the Computer Learning Center and in the Medical Sciences Library, plus many private terminals in the laboratories and departmental computer rooms throughout the Basic Sciences Building are connected to the network. The network offers access to MEDLINE and other CD-ROM databases, various software packages, E-Mail and the Internet.
The health insurance program is administered by the Bursar. (914) 594-4319. All Ph.D. students and all international students with an F-1 or J-1 Visa must be covered by medical and hospitalization insurance acceptable to the College. Full-time Ph.D. students are eligible to receive individual coverage from the College that is paid for by the Graduate School. Family plan coverage is available at the student's expense. Full time M.S. students can purchase individual or family plan coverage from the College. The College’s student group insurance is carried by Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Greater New York and provides comprehensive medical insurance and 120-day, full semi-private hospitalization coverage to subscribing students. Enrollment forms are available in the Office of the Bursar. A student who elects to retain some other health insurance will be required to submit a written statement from a responsible individual of legal age assuming responsibility for all hospital charges not covered by such insurance. This information must be given to the Admissions Office.
All full-time matriculated graduate students (Master’s or Ph.D. programs) are eligible to participate in Student Health Services. If you are a full-time Ph.D. student or if you are enrolled in our student medical and hospitalization insurance plan, you are required to enroll in Student Health Services. A full-time Master’s student who has health insurance, either through the College or another source, may also enroll in Student Health Services during the registration period. Yhere is a Student Health Services fee of two hundred dollars ($200.00) that is payable on an annual basis at the time of fall registration. (The payment of this fee also entitles the student to use the Student Mental Health Services, which are described in a later section.) Payment is made at the Bursar’s Office. This fee is waived for full-time Ph.D. students. There is a nurse on duty in Student Health Services during normal daytime hours (Monday through Friday 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, excluding lunch hour). A physician is available during specified hours each weekday. These health care professionals can diagnose and treat common illnesses and can refer you to specialists when necessary. PLEASE NOTE: Because hours may change due to an unforeseen emergency, please consult the doctors’ hours, which are posted on the door of Health Services.
Proof of Immunization for All Entering Students All entering students born after January 1, 1957 must show proof of immunization against measles, mumps and rubella by completing the Student Immunization Record, which is sent to you by the Graduate School Admissions Office. These immunizations are mandated by the New York State Health Codes. If you are unable to obtain your immunization record, Student Health Services can provide these immunizations for the following fees. Measles $25.00, Mumps $25, Rubella $25; MMR $40.00, PPD $15 and T/d $15.00. Ph.D. students must submit the immunization form directly to Student Health Services. All other students should submit the form to the Graduate School Office. Because of concerns for patient safety, hospitals require that students coming in contact with patients demonstrate their immunity to Varicella (chickenpox). A Varicella titer is not required of graduate students unless they will be rotating through a hospital (e.g., M.D./Ph.D. students) or will have significant contact with patients. Health Services will arrange for a Varicella titer for students requiring it. Physical Examination and Medical History Ph.D. Students Student Health Services requires a physical examination and medical history for all full-time Ph.D. students. A Health Questionnaire is mailed to all newly accepted Ph.D. students. This form must be completed by the student’s physician and submitted directly to Student Health Services. Please contact your private physician in sufficient time to obtain the required examinations. If there is no private doctor available to you, the Health Services office will provide a physical examination at a fee of $125.00, payable on the date of your examination. It will be necessary to call for an appointment (914-594-4234). The required information and tests include the following: medical history and physical examination; PPD - tuberculosis skin test (within one year), with documentation of positive PPD and chest X-ray if previous PPD was positive (within one year); documentation of immunization for measles 1 and 2, mumps, rubella, and T/d (within 10 years). Note: It is the student’s responsibility to obtain the required medical history, physical examination and all necessary immunization data prior to registration. Failure to do so could result in a delay in enrollment. Master’s Students A Medical history would only be necessary if you were intending to participate in the student medical insurance plan or enroll in the Student Health Services program.
Immunization against Hepatitis B is available through Student Health Services. This is recommended for graduate students whose research puts them at risk of exposure to this disease. If you work with monkey or human tissue, blood or body fluid you are offered and encouraged to take the Hepatitis B vaccine series. If you are not at risk for exposure (e.g. working with cats, dogs and rats), the vaccine is not offered free of charge through Student Health Services. You are encouraged to consult your faculty advisor and graduate program director for evaluation of individual risk. Needle pricks are referred through Student Health Services to Infectious Diseases for treatment and follow up. It should be noted that New York Medical College offers this vaccination series free of charge. However, if for any reason you do not complete the vaccination series of three (3) injections as recommended, you will then become responsible for payment of additional injections. Student Mental Health Services Totally confidential mental health services are available to graduate students who participate in Student Health Services. This includes all full-time Ph.D. students and Master’s students who pay the annual Student Health Services fee. Student Mental Health Services offers diverse and unique approaches to personal problems. Students are welcome to become involved in personal counseling and therapy. Education involves the development of the intellect and character and personal therapy and counseling is an outstanding way of understanding and improving one's character. A wide variety of services are available through the outpatient clinics of the Psychiatric Institute, adjacent to the Main Hospital. Individual, marital, family, short-and-long term therapy (see below) is available. Students will be treated by psychiatry residents under attending supervision. Confidentiality is closely maintained. Fees are on a sliding scale and no student will be refused treatment because of financial considerations. The "Stu-Dent" dental program, sponsored by the New York University David B. Kriser Dental Center, is an optional pre-paid plan available to all New York Medical College students, their spouses, and dependents. For an annual enrollment fee of $125, members are entitled to semi-annual dental examinations and cleaning, diagnostic X-rays and complete evaluation of treatments needs, emergency treatments to relieve pain and discomfort, and all routine amalgam and composite restorations. All treatment is provided by senior dental students who are closely supervised by an experienced licensed dentist at the Kriser Dental Center. The International Student and Scholar (ISS) Advisor is available to guide and assist all international students with many of the concerns and requests they may have while attending New York Medical College. The ISS Advisor will provide assistance on such U.S. immigration matters as visa requirements and regulations, school transfers, extensions of stay, travel outside the United States, work permits and practical training. An orientation will be held for new international students when they first arrive on campus, and they can meet with the ISS Advisor thereafter, when questions or problems arise.
The Medical Science Library (MSL) is located in the Basic Science Building. It houses a collection of over 176,000 volumes and 2,200 journals, of which approximately 1,100 are current subscriptions. Many of the journals are available on-line as full-text versions via “hot links” leading to selected medical and/or health-related sites on the Web. The Library serves all faculty, staff and students of the College with a full array of information resources and services. Included are individual consultations for assistance; small group classes on the effective use of resources and databases; as well as many services (i.e., photocopy and interlibrary loan, reference assistance, literature searches, etc.) that are available electronically through the Library’s home page. Following the academic calendar, hours are extended prior to exams and shortened during the summer months and holiday period. The Media Library (594-4666) is located in the Learning Center and is staffed afternoons, Monday through Friday. The Education Media/Distance Learning request forms for audiovisual equipment and services are available from the Library or the MSL home page. All graduate students are required to register their vehicles with the Security Department, which is located in the Basic Sciences Building. The student ID card obtained when you first register allows for access to the parking lot behind (South side) the Basic Sciences Building.
It is the policy of New York Medical College to promote the safety and security of all faculty, students and employees on College premises; to prohibit any criminal activities including sexual assault or other sex offenses; to report any alleged criminal conduct to the appropriate enforcement authorities; and to discipline any faculty member, student and employee after conviction of a criminal offense. Discipline may include, as applicable, suspension, expulsion, dismissal, or termination of employment. In the case of a student, the dean will appoint an ad hoc faculty committee to review the case and make recommendations to the dean. In order to promote awareness and facilitate prevention of sexual assault offenses, the College provides specific information to incoming students about sexual assault prevention measures. This information includes the legal sanctions and applicable penalties under applicable laws, ordinances and regulations on sex offenses; the campus security procedures for dealing with sex offenses; and the identification and availability of counseling and support services. It is the responsibility of all faculty, students and employees to report all incidents of alleged criminal conduct to the College’s Security Department and to cooperate fully with regard to the specific details of such incidents. The College’s Security Department investigates such incidents and, as necessary, reports the matter to local enforcement authorities. The Security Department also maintains records of all reported incidents and collects information on reported criminal offense and arrest statistics on the College’s Valhalla campus, as required by federal law. Such information, together with relevant campus security procedures is available to faculty, students and employees and to any applicant for enrollment upon written request. |
