Morphological and Functional Basis of Pathobiology

Review and extension of concepts of anatomy and physiology as a foundation for the biology of disease processes, including cellular alterations and inflammation; genetic, immunological, nutritional and circulatory disorders; heart, blood and vascular systems; respiration; gastrointestinal, genitourinary, endocrine and nervous systems; effects of infections, chemical and physical agents; neoplasia and aging. Fundamentals of Pharmacology

Course Objective: To introduce the underlying principles of pharmacology and provide a perspective of the historical, regulatory (FDA) and industrial aspects of pharmacological sciences. This will include overviews of the physiological, biochemical and anatomical foundations for the interactions of drugs and chemicals with biological systems. This course is intended to orient new graduate students to the general scope of pharmacologic science.

Course Description: The course is directed toward students involved in scientific data analysis in the basic science disciplines. The techniques presented will be those currently in use throughout the basic medical sciences departments. While no prerequisite statistics is required, some basic familiarity with statistics is expected and can be achieved from any elementary statistic text. Statistics for Basic Medical Sciences is open to all students in the PhD program. All others wishing to register must do so with the permission of the course director.
