WELCOME

Welcome to the Web site of the Graduate School of Basic Medical Sciences (GSBMS, for short) of New York Medical College.

Francis L. Belloni, Ph.D.

Dean, Graduate School of Basic Medical Sciences

The GSBMS has been offering formal academic training in the basic medical sciences since the 1960’s. At present, there are over 150 students pursuing either a Ph.D. or an M.S. degree in one of our scientific disciplines – biochemistry & molecular biology, cell biology, microbiology & immunology, experimental pathology, pharmacology, or physiology. Our Ph.D. programs are designed to prepare its graduates for careers as independent researchers and high-level leadership positions in academia, industry, and government. Our M.S. programs help prepare students for a variety of interesting and productive careers in science and science-related fields. Our M.S. alumni have gone on to enjoy success as researchers, managers, teachers, environmental specialists and in other positions. Many have built upon their M.S. training by going on to pursue a Ph.D. or M.D. degree.

The GSBMS’ graduate faculty comprises about 80 individuals, most of whom direct ongoing, externally-funded, state-of-the-art research programs. There are ample opportunities for students to participate actively in these research projects. GSBMS class sizes are generally small, encouraging very close and personal student-faculty interaction.

The basic science departments house much of the College’s scientific research. Current projects focus on cardiovascular disease, neuroscience, cancer, infectious diseases, and embryological development.
