The William P. Van Wagenen 2013 Fellowship Awarded to Ryan Ormond

Congratulations to Ryan Ormond for winning the prestigious William P. Van Wagenen Fellowship for 2013. He just started his neurosurgical oncology fellowship at Emory in Atlanta and will be traveling to Rheinische Friedrich Wilhelms Universität in Bonn, Germany during his Van Wagenen year. His research title is "Cell reprogramming: stem cell-based systems for studying nervous system diseases and repair". Ryan will also be doing some work in clinical neurosurgery. More details regarding this accomplishment will be posted shortly. A very special thanks to Dr. Jhanwar-Uniyal and Dr. Raj Murali for their tremendous support and guidance.
Jayson Neil MD Wins the New York State Neurosurgical Society Research Award

Congratulations to Jayson Neil for winning the New York State Neurosurgical Society first place research award for his presentation titled, "GBM and Its Stem Cells: Finding Novel Inhibitors for Effective and Selective Targeting." This work was performed in the lab of Dr. Jhanwar-Uniyal under her direction as part of her ongoing cutting edge research in this field.

Congratulations to Avinash Mohan MD on the birth of his son Ganesh Sebastian Mohan. He was born on May 31st and weighs 8lbs 9oz.
Congratulations to Jayson Neil MD on the birth of his son Xavier Andreau Neil. He was born on May 26th and weighs 7lbs 5oz and is 19.5" long.

ACGME REVIEW

Congratulations to the Neurosurgery Department! The results from the recent ACGME review are back and once again they were awarded an unconditional 5 year gold seal of approval (with commendation as an exemplary program) this time! Thanks to all those who helped in this endeavor, as well as, all who help to train our residents.

Congratulations to the neurosurgery residents and those who train them! This year every elligible resident passed step one of the neurosurgey boards for practice, including the PGY1! As per routine the PGY 4 passed for credit!

NYMC Department of Neurosurgery Annual Boat Cruise

The annual neurosurgery boat cruise went off without a hitch! Always the best party of the year!
We want to announce the upcoming annual neurosurgery cruise! As always we have chartered a boat for the evening taking us around the tip of Manhattan including the statue of liberty. It includes a buffet style dinner, all you can drink, DJ, etc.!!! It is scheduled for May 13th and is an open invitation, cost is $75. Pictures to follow after the event!
The residents and attendings just returned from the Denver AANS conference where we presented a poster on Temporal Encephaloceles and received awards for our NREF grants in spinal cord research. Congrats to Ryan, Craig, and Dhruve!!
