Medical Research

The Department of Neurosurgery is heavily involved in research and publication. Dr. Meena Jhanwar-Uniyal is the Research Associate Professor of Neurosurgery. The neurosurgery residents have a year of dedicated basic science research as an integral part of their residency. The year is protected, and the residents have done significant work during this year, leading to many awards and publications.

The Department works closely with various basic science departments, including Cell Biology and Physiology. Excellent facilities are available for spinal cord injury research in collaboration with the Department of Cell Biology. Brain tumor research is conducted within the Department by Dr. Jhanwar-Uniyal. Facilities include the ability to culture brain tumor cells and study signaling pathways of both primary and metastatic brain tumors. Studies are also progressing on the stem cell as it relates to glioblastoma multiforme. Several publications have resulted from this research effort.

The residents are strongly encouraged to participate in clinical research,. Monthly research meetings are held, during which the progress of various research projects and publications is discussed. Every resident is expected to always be involved in writing a paper. We have ongoing clinical research projects in subarachnoid hemorrhage, vasospasm, spinal cord injury, and brain injury.
