Thirteenth Annual Louis R.M. DelGuercio, M.D., Distinguished Visiting Professorship and Research Day Set for December 14

The 13th Annual Louis R.M. DelGuercio, M.D., Distinguished Visiting Professorship and Research Day is scheduled for Wednesday, December 14 in the Medical Education Center. The day will feature a moderated poster session and podium presentations by medical students, residents and faculty members from the Department of Surgery at NYMC and hospital affiliates. The highlight of the event will be the distinguished visiting professor lecture by Carol EH Scott-Conner, M.D., Ph.D., M.B.A.,  professor emeritus in the Department of Surgery, University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, Iowa City, who will present “How to Write and Thrive in Academics.” 

Dr. Scott-Conner earned a B.S. degree in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and worked as an engineer before attending medical school. She received her M.D. degree from New York University School of Medicine, where she subsequently completed a residency in general surgery.  She received a Ph.D. in anatomy from the University of Kentucky and an M.B.A. from the Else School of Management, Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss.

In 1995, she became professor and head of surgery at the University of Iowa and became the second woman in the history of the field of U.S. surgery to be appointed chair of surgery at a medical school. Dr. Scott-Conner has been active on 22 editorial boards and has authored or edited more than 12 textbooks, including two on the craft of medical writing, in addition to peer-reviewed manuscripts spanning the gamut of general surgery. For the past 15 years, Dr. Scott-Conner has served on a number of committees of the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) dealing with health issues of astronauts.
