As the first year of medical school was winding down for the School of Medicine (SOM) Class of 2020, they took some time to reflect upon a defining moment of medical school—the gross anatomy course. It was standing room only at the 29th Annual Convocation of Thanks held on May 12 in Nevins Auditorium, when the School of Medicine Class of 2020, articulated their gratitude to the individuals who gave the ultimate gift to the study of human anatomy. Matthew Pravetz, O.F.M., Ph.D. ’88, professor of cell biology and anatomy, program director and assistant dean for basic sciences, welcomed the audience of families and friends of the donors, pointing out how sometimes it can be difficult to express thanks, but the School of Medicine Class of 2020 did just that— in spades. They expressed their gratitude, respect and awe for the anatomical donors whom they fondly referred to as their first patients through personal reflections, poetry, music, song and dance. Oluwadara Nnoli, SOM Class of 2020, expressed her feelings with an original song, Remember. Jenny Wu, SOM Class of 2020, shared her thoughts in a video. After the ceremony, the group moved outdoors where the Class of 2020 ceremoniously planted a tree in honor of the anatomical donors. View the photo gallery here.
