Saint Vincent Catholic Medical Centers
Residency in Pathology

Chairman:
John F. Gillooley, M.D.

Overview

The four-year residency program in anatomic and clinical pathology has eight fully approved positions available. The program is supervised by a staff of full time board certified pathologists. Anatomic pathology and all routine clinical pathology diagnostic services are grouped within the department of laboratories, allowing an integrated comprehensive training program.

Curriculum

The first two years of residency are devoted to anatomic pathology. There are over 12,000 surgical specimens annually, covering a wide range of diseases and approximately 100 autopsies. Autopsy and surgical pathology are integrated under close supervision of staff pathologists. Forensic pathology is included in the 2nd year. Sub-specialty training in cytology, electron microscopy and neuropathology is continuous throughout the two years.

The resident spends his/her third and fourth years rotating through the various sections of the clinical laboratories, the major areas of which are chemistry, hematology, microbiology, immunology and transfusion medicine. More than 2 million tests are performed annually in these laboratories. In addition there is training in nuclear medicine and cytogenetics. Further anatomic pathology experience is gained during these two years by attendance at daily teaching conferences. The resident who demonstrates competence in his/her rotation through the clinical laboratories may choose to devote the fourth year to subspecialization in one area of clinical pathology.

Resources

Integrated into the daily activities is a comprehensive program of intradepartmental teaching conferences. A surgical pathology signout meeting is held daily. Anatomic pathology, clinical pathology and journal review conferences are held regularly. Residents participate in these sessions and assist in teaching house staff and medical students. Interdepartmental conferences provide additional learning experiences. Research activities are conducted by various members of the department in accordance with their interests and resident participation is encouraged.

Stipends and Maintenance

Stipends are competitive with other academic institutions. All staff members are provided with professional liability insurance, hospitalization and medical care, uniforms and uniform laundry.
