Race for Rehab

2021 Race for Rehab logoRace for Rehab 5K is an annual race held on the NYMC campus each October. The festive event—which also features student-led warm-ups and a post-race awards ceremony—debuted in 1999 and is hosted by Doctor of Physical Therapy (D.P.T.) students from the School of Health Sciences and Practice. Proceeds from the race benefit Achilles International, a not-for-profit organization that provides a community of support to athletes with disabilities, using sports as a tool to offer hope, inspiration, and the joy of achievement.

Achilles International

Achilles International provides athletes with disabilities all around the United States and abroad a supportive community to train and race. The non-profit organization was founded by Dick Traum in 1983 after his life-changing experience, becoming the first person with an amputation to run the New York City Marathon. Dick wanted to give other people with disabilities the support, strength, and confidence to participate in similar events. Achilles International has created programs tailored to children, teens, adults, and veterans of all levels and abilities, giving them training and racing opportunities. Achilles has grown to 65 chapters in the United States and 70 chapters abroad and continues to grow and bring athletes of all abilities, ages, and locations together.
