Undergraduate Medical Education (M.D. Program)

The School of Medicine’s undergraduate medical education program introduces aspiring physicians to real patients early and often. Coupled with our comprehensive curriculum, this hands-on approach ensures that our students gain both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, and can respond and relate to patients with equal parts competence and compassion. The program includes a comprehensive, fair, and uniform system of assessing the progress and capabilities of our medical students.

NYMC SOM was one of the first medical schools in the country to provide first- and second-year student experiences in community-based, primary care settings where students work one-on-one with generalist preceptors. We remain a leading choice for students who want to become highly capable clinicians with the skills that inspire trust and confidence in their patients.

The education program objectives of the SOM reflect the central importance of attaining generalist competencies that are the foundational clinical knowledge and skills required of all students regardless of their ultimate career choice.
