Preceptor Program

The School of Medicine’s preceptor program provides longitudinal clinical training under the direct mentorship of a primary care physician. The program, part of the Foundations of Clinical Medicine course, offers students the opportunity to learn basic principles of medical practice through interactive large and small group seminars, direct patient interaction, one-on-one mentorship by practicing clinicians, and standardized patient/simulation training sessions.

Topics covered in the program include:

  • Medical interviewing
  • Physical examination
  • Doctor-patient relationship
  • Clinical reasoning
  • Humanism and professionalism
  • Health promotion/disease prevention

Using standardized patients – trained actors playing the part of patients – and patient simulators in our Clinical Skills and Simulation Center, students gain the skills they need to succeed in clinical practice.
