Speech-Language Pathology - Admission Requirements

Application requirements

For applicants accepted into the program, a non-refundable deposit of $500.00 must be submitted to guarantee a place in the class. The deposit is applied towards the first year tuition.

Specific requirements for admission to the program are:

  1. Applicants must have a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree from an accredited college.
  2. Applicants should have an academic record that includes a balance of course work in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, including competency in English writing. Generally, applicants should have a G.P.A. of at least 3.4. The following specific prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade of C or better within 10-years of the application deadline date (exceptions to the 10 year limit may be made for individuals who work in a health field):
  • At least one course in biological sciences (may not be a course in the anatomy and physiology of speech and hearing).
  • At least one course in the physical sciences
  • At least one course in mathematics or statistics
  • At least two courses in behavioral and/or social sciences
  1. An introductory-level course in communication disorders is recommended (not required).
  2. Applicants must submit results of the Graduate Record Examination General test. The institution number to use for the test is 2563. For information, contact the Educational Testing Service (ETS), PO Box 6000, Princeton, NJ 08541-6000; (609) 921-9000.
  3. Three recommendation forms are required; at least one must be from a college professor from whom the applicant has taken at least one course.
  4. Applicants must submit a typed personal statement of approximately 500 words (see enclosed guidelines for content).
  5. Certificate in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.
  6. Applicants are expected to be computer literate before entering the program. Several of the courses assume that the student is proficient in the following areas: general computer skills, word-processing, spreadsheets, e-mail, and Internet. Remedial instruction in computer literacy is available.
  7. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of at least 660 (PBT), 287 (CBT, or 117 (IBT - no score less than 27 in any of the 4 categories) for all applicants who are in any of the following categories:

a) those whose native language is not English; b) those from countries where English is one of the official languages, but not necessarily the first language of the majority of the population; c) those from countries where English is not a native language, although available as a language of instruction at all or some levels of schooling; d) those whose transcripts are not in English or from schools in non English speaking countries.

To be considered for admission and subsequent advancement, candidates for the M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology must demonstrate motivation, maturity, stability, sound judgment, a sense of responsibility, and good moral character; they must evince cognitive, motor and organizational skills, sensory perception, and ability to synthesize and apply knowledge; and they must possess such other attributes as the faculty deems to be essential to become a caring and effective speech-language pathologist.
