They've Done it Again!

Graduates of the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Program Continue to Excel on the National Licensure Examination

On September 5, 2008 the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy reported that the Class of 2008 scored an outstanding 89% FIRST TIME passing rate on the National Licensure Examination. This exceeds the average first-time passing rates for both New York State (79%) and all US Accredited Schools (88%). The Department of Physical Therapy, the School of Public Health, and New York Medical College congratulate its graduates on their performance.

The Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree program is designed to prepare competent and caring physical therapists who will be able to skillfully practice in a variety of clinical settings and evolve with changes in the health care system. The program provides students a strong foundation in the basic sciences, expertise in the examination, diagnosis, and treatment of movement impairments, and extensive clinical training in the practice of physical therapy. Graduates are proficient in their clinical skills, critical thinking, problem-solving, and professional behavior.

A major feature that distinguishes the program is the well-structured, problem-based learning format used to present the clinical coursework. A second asset of the pro­gram is the collaborative teaching and research activities that occur among the many programs and departments of the university. These include anatomy and histology, neuroscience, and physiology, as well as specific clinical sciences germane to physical therapy, such as orthopedics, neurology, medicine, surgery, and cardiology.

In addition to benefiting from a superb educational environment on campus, students participate in five fulltime clinical affiliations that integrate the science and theory of physical therapy with clinical practice. Students have the opportunity to practice in a wide variety of healthcare settings across the country, under the guidance and supervision of experienced practicing therapists. The end result of the educational experience at New York Medical College is a graduate who is prepared to pass the national licensure examination of the American Physical Therapy Association and to excel in the current health care environment as a skilled and well-respected physical therapist.
