Physical Therapy DPT - Doctoral Projects
AREA OF FOCUS: Public Health
TITLE: The Correlation Between Functional Lower Extremity
Strength Testing and Open Chain Isokinetic Testing
FACULTY ADVISOR: Daniel Millrood, PT, EdM
NUMBER OF STUDENTS THAT CAN BE ACCOMMODATED: 1
DESCRIPTION:
The unilateral stepdown and lower
extremity functional reach (the “star” reach) tests are commonly
used as clinical indicators for functional lower extremity
strength, yet examiners are currently unable to compare
strength/endurance findings to normalized data. Although manual
muscle testing may be utilized to score individual muscle
strength, the findings frequently do not relate well to weight
bearing function during activities of daily living (ADL’s).
Research is currently under way to obtain normalized data that
will allow clinicians to objectively grade unilateral step down
and functional lower extremity reach tests as compared to
normalized data. This project will compare and correlate results
of lower extremity functional strength tests including the 8”
unilateral step down test and the lower extremity reach test to
open chain isokinetic strength test results.
