Student life at New York Medical College is surprisingly varied. Special interest groups such as The Arrhythmias a cappella singing group, Christian Fellowship, Family Practice Interest Group, the Student Newspaper, sports clubs in ice hockey and rugby, and St. Luke's Medical Society are all part of the campus fabric. There is a ruling body of government for students called the Student Senate; each class is represented by five senators, and the senate body itself elects the president who is traditionally a fourth-year student. For all students there are a variety of organizations that encourage participation based on cultural, religious, professional or other interests. Among them are national groups such as Alpha Omega Alpha (honor society), Medical Student Section of the Medical Society of the State of New York, American Medical Students Association and the American Medical Women's Association. An increasing number of students at the college are married and have children. For them and for those with significant others the Friends Club offers get-togethers and children's parties so that spouses and partners can be included in nonscholarly events. The College can accommodate 509 students in apartments on campus, which are just a short walk from the two buildings where most classes and student activities are held. Located within the housing complex is a new fitness center dedicated for student use only.
