Introduction

Department of Surgery Curriculum and Rotations

We have adopted the recently defined curriculum from the Surgical Council on Resident Education (SCORE), of which Dr. Risucci is a member. The SCORE curriculum defines specific diseases/conditions and operations/procedures in which residents need to develop expertise. This curriculum divides diseases/conditions based on whether residents need broad vs. focused knowledge and divides operations/procedures into those considered essential/common, essential/uncommon or complex. We are currently 1 of 33 programs involved in the recent beta testing of the SCORE web portal, which provides residents and faculty rapid, on-line access to disease- and/or procedure-specific curricular materials. Each module includes learning objectives, reading materials that include chapters from some of the most popular surgery texts, videos of procedures and open-ended questions.

Rotations

Objectives for all rotations are conceptually organized within the framework of the six ACGME core competencies. Our curriculum includes rotation- and PGY-specific goals and objectives. Below is the Block Schedule diagram for the categorical track in our program.

Fundamentals of Surgery Curriculum. The Fundamentals of Surgery Curriculum is a highly interactive, case-based, online curriculum that addresses the essential content areas that all surgical residents need to master in the early years of training. Developed by the American College of Surgeons Division of Education, the curriculum includes over 90 simulated case scenarios in which residents are asked to recognize and assess symptoms and signs, order appropriate tests and procedures, evaluate data, and initiate appropriate actions. Approximately 20 hours of interactive patient scenarios are used to address essential content in the 11 areas of: preoperative assessment; on-call issues; fluid and electrolyte management; nutritional support; pain management; respiratory management; cardiac conditions; unresponsive patients and agitated patients; gastrointestinal conditions; wound management; and patient and workplace safety
