Professional Educators

Donald A. Risucci, PhD
Professor of Surgery
Associate Program Director, General Surgery
Director, Section of Surgical Education and Research

Kevin C Wolfe, PhD
Coordinator, Education and Evaluation
Associate Director, Section of Surgical Education and Research

The department of surgery at New York Medical College employs two full time surgical educators, both of whom have Doctorate degrees in Applied Psychology. These professional educators apply their expertise in the psychology of learning, motivation, evaluation, and skill development to the design of educational programs for residents, medical students and attending surgeons. The input and hard work of these professional educators has lead to many innovative educational and evaluation programs and methodologies. Through his affiliations with many surgical education societies and associations, Dr Risucci has been involved in many cutting edge educational research projects at the national level. Dr Wolfe recently joined our staff after receiving his degree in Applied Organizational Psychology. He completed his doctoral work under direction of Dr Risucci, which he recently presented at the convention of the Society of Industrial & Organizational Psychology. This study analyzed a national database of faculty ratings of surgical resident performance related to ACGME core competencies. The project, supported and conducted in collaboration with the ACS Division of Education and the Information Technology Committee of the Association of Program Directors in Surgery (APDS), formed the basis for a paper published with several program directors across the U.S. (Journal of Surgical Education 2007; 64(6):390-94). Drs Risucci and Wolfe manage our on-line educational resources and evaluation systems, as well as work closely with faculty and residents to develop education, training, evaluation and research programs and projects.
